Mission

San Carlo was founded to create the conditions in which artists can take their research in new directions: working at a different scale, producing a new work, responding to particular qualities of light or sound, or developing an environment, film, performance or installation conceived in relation to the church.

Production is central to this process. Site visits, conversations, research, planning and realisation belong to a single trajectory, with the work itself determining the time needed to reach its final form.

The programme brings together artists from Italy and abroad, new and existing works, different practices, and people working in museums, foundations, galleries, collections, publishing and research. In this way, San Carlo establishes continuity through a small number of projects, each leaving a mark on those involved and on the history of the space.
