Founded in 2021, it is located in the seventeenth-century church from
which it takes its name.
The church shapes every project through its scale and character: the nave and dome, natural
light, acoustics, surfaces and the traces of time. San Carlo invites artists from Italy and abroad to
work with these conditions, developing new commissions, productions and works that take their
form in relation to the space.
The programme is shaped by considered choices and by allowing research the time it needs.
Across successive exhibitions, San Carlo builds a history of works, relationships and temporary
transformations of the space. Each project temporarily alters how the church is perceived,
leaving its mark on those who create and encounter it, and on the space itself.
